Mathi here, checking in during dead week to reflect on her experience in her 2nd core public health class!
My favorite things about this class were the broader focus of scientific frameworks and then applying them to specific public health issues through writing science blogs, exposure characterizations, and explainer videos.
The scientific frameworks that we focused on were:
Scientific Method Framework

Oh! And my favorite framework, you ask? That is a fantastic question. My favorite is honestly the Risk Assessment Framework. It was the newest one because I hadn't really focused or learned about occupational exposures, so I thoroughly learned a lot and enjoyed thinking about occupational exposures. This is something that I know I don't really think about in the context of public health because I often think about infectious diseases.
Something that I learned during this class was that I really enjoy learning more about research methodology. When the guest speaker came to talk to us about his master's thesis on vaping, I found it really interesting that you have the flexibility to focus on such specific topics in research. This makes me excited to pursue graduate school in the future.
some topics of interest for me are: biostats, epidemiology, maternal and child health, homelessness, and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
I'm excited to see where the next core takes me, but attached below is my exposure characterization on wood dust among wood workers, something I am really proud of!
I found that I actually really enjoy scientific writing, it pushes me to be more concise and use evidence to back-up my claims. I also finally tackled using a reference manager, Oh mendeley! Love of my life! :)
