I have made it through my VERY FIRST class of the major and..... I am so glad to say I think I picked the right major :) This class has exposed me to so many different disciplines of public health and I am now confused more than ever about what I want to do—but I want to say that is OKAY. We are all going to be okay.
I HAVE learned, however, that there are a couple topics that spark interest in me:
I have been exploring the effects of houselessness and the disproportionate impact of experiencing worse health outcomes among this population
maternal and child health (specific to life course perspective and unhoused populations)
social determinants of health
implementation science
decolonization
And here, are the pictures that I remember most when I think of this class:

This is a classic diagram that was brought up every lecture, depicting the social determinants of health—a strong pillar of Public Health 3.0 Practice.

We learned about this picture during our conversation on Food Systems as a Public Health issue. We learned that the competition in the food market to produce, maximize, and minimize resources used has increased the use of antibiotic in chickens, leading to antibiotic resistance. In addition, chickens have grown in size—leading them to be so big they can't even walk or live properly, and their beaks have been cut off so that they do not get in fights with each other (possibly killing each other) before they grow big enough to be killed anyway.
The assignment I am most proud of throughout this quarter would be my PSA. I took a creative approach and made a video depicting the structural issues of homelessness that lead a pregnant people to experience worse health outcomes, along with their children. You can see this video below!
I also contacted Real Change about submitting my third assignment, an Op-Ed to their newspaper, and I am still waiting on hearing back, but I have good hope!
